International Presence in Expomin 2010 :

15.000 Square Meters of International Exhibition

Among the mining fairs that take place in the world, Expomin is the one that has more exhibitor countries, allowing visitors access to the innovation that experiences international mining activity, as in no other fair.

It is not a say that Expomin is "The Center for World Mining in Chile". Like no other fair in the world since its earliest versions, this exhibition offers an extraordinary international presence, showcasing technologies from Germany, Canada, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, South Africa, Argentina, Peru, Brazil and China, among others.

This can be explained in part to the historical foreign investment undertaken by countless companies of foreign origin in the area of mining activity in Chile. This factor has shaped the trajectory of this activity since its inception.

Another key aspect is the fact that Chile is the country that produces and has the largest copper reserves in the world, which attracts the operation of the largest companies of various flags, such as South Africa, USA and Australia.

It is also necessary to consider that Chile has an incipient technological development, which requires technologies used abroad. As a result it is expected that the international suppliers in Chile represent over 60% of the supply services and technology equipment required by the local mining.

With regard to the dimensions of the area corresponding to international exhibitors in Expomin 2010, the Executive Director of the fair, Carlos Parada, notes that there are several components to consider at the moment of giving exact figures. "Today the big international companies are installed in Chile and operate as national organisms through subsidiaries or brands installed in Chile”.

Is important the presence of international delegations that presents companies not established in Chile, but which nevertheless are decreasing their presence because, when they begin to make business in Chile, they install offices nationwide. “Then, the percentage of companies with foreign origin is very high. If we add these components, the percentage of international brands present in Expomin outnumber nationals by 85%,” he says.

In relation to the international exhibitors present in Expomin they are countries with culture and quarrying mining trajectory or just technology providers. It is interesting to note that the fair brings together two categories: supplier countries now have a vast mining development -Canada, Australia or South Africa-, and also countries which used to have a mining sector that allowed them to develop technology, which continued to develop, independently of the destiny of mining extraction, -like most European countries, where mining has lowered its extraction, but remain strong countries in offering technologies for mining-.

In this path stands the challenge that Chile should take in the coming decades. "If one day mining in Chile ceases, which today is not really that close because the reserves are unquestionably important, Chile should be able to develop technology based on the knowledge acquired about mining. That is now happening somehow, not at the level of sophisticated machinery, but in terms of solving local technical challenges that are not possible to solve with foreign experience.
